Your Daily Kick… Blog. Three times.

It’s a New Year! Today is Jan. 2nd and I am absolutely brimming with excitement about what this year holds in store. But, not just for me. I can’t wait to hear about the incredible things that happen to you this 2009!

To help you get your year started right I want to share with you a daily kick that is both very powerful, but also a little bit time consuming. Quite simply what you need to do is blog. But, not just once. Three times.

Blogging three different ways.

This is going to take a kick to get started. But, the rewards are greater than the investments.

What you need to do… today… is set up three different blogging accounts for three separate blogs. Yes, I said three. It’s easy. Trust me.

There is a reason for my madness here. By using the resources available on the internet for free promotion of your website, you are able to spread your name, brand, and offers in a much wider area than if you kept everything in one playground. I’m going to use a basketball example to help illustrate this.

In basketball there are five players on the court at a time. They must work together (passing, communicating, setting screens, moving without the ball, and other basketball terminology) in order to move the ball past the opponent’s defense and score. And not just once, but many, many times during the course of a game. Your blogging campaign is much like a basketball team. You need more than one player. You can have one really good player, but you need more than one.

Each “player” helps you to move the ball around by actively sending traffic to the “basket” (that would be your main website where your sales pitch is made). The players are the blogs, the blog posts, the guest posts, the comments… pretty much everything that happens at that blog. Only it’s not just one… there’s three. At least.

Set up your new blogs

This post is not a tutorial on how to set up a blog. What I’m going to do, though, is give you direction on where to go that will make setting up your three new blogs fairly easy and straightforward.

Blog #1. Go to Blogger.com and start an account. It’s free and it’s pretty simple.

Blog #2. Go to Wordpress.com and start an account. Again, it’s free and fairly straightforward.

Blog #3. This blog is going to be a self-hosted blog. That means it’s not free. You need to have a web host account and then set up a blog of your own. This sounds a little bit daunting, but it can be done pretty easily. Here’s how…

1. Go to Dreamhost.com and get started with a very cheap hosting account. You can get hosting for as little as $5.95 a month.

2. Register a domain name through the same account. You get a free domain name with you order so that makes things easier and cheaper. If you want to add more they are only $9.95 a year.

3. Once your account is started and your domain is registered Dreamhost has a great feature. They have this thing called “One Click Install”. Basically what it does is installs your choice of extras to your website. Even Wordpress blog platform. You don’t have to download anything. Just click it, set up some information and it’s ready.

Each Different, But The Same

Before you go off to do your merry blogging keep this in mind.

While your blogs are all teammates they should all have distinct personalities. What I mean by this is that while being the same niche, they should be different in topic. Each blog stands is basically the same niche, but are focusing on a different topic within that niche. This way you can attract different visitors than you would with just one blog. See, teammates working together for the benefit of the team.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that you should mix up the info so you aren’t using duplicate content. If you write a blog post for one blog that could be used on the others reword them and use different phrases throughout each post.

Of course, original content for each blog would be a huge benefit to your traffic, and more importantly your search engine rankings. Don’t let that scare you. They don’t all have to be 1000 word posts. Short, concise 200 word posts are just as effective.

So….

Go start those blogs. Get them set up and start posting. Stay consistent at it and you’ll begin seeing traffic coming to your main site through three different funnels.

Happy New Year!

I want to take a few moments and wish everyone a very Happy New Year!

More than that, though, I hope that each and every one of you realize your greatest dreams this coming year.

I recently spent some time talking with a few people the other day about the year that was and the year that is going to be. I have to admit that the intense excitment for their dreams, goals, plans, and other aspirations really got me pumped too.

While I had already had big plans for the coming year, I was inspired to dream even bigger. In fact, I am determined to make 2009 the year that I challenge myself much harder than ever before. This goes for both my online and offline world.

One of my personal beliefs is that you get better by doing. Even if you absolutely stink at something, the more you try it, practice it, and even rely on it more and more, you’ll get better at it. Eventually. There are some things I’ve been wanting to do, but never really got the courage up to stretch myself enough in order to actually do them.

This year is going to be different.

As I mentioned, because of the excitement that my friends’ had about the coming year and seeing their own dreams come to fruition, I have set rather big goals. I actually tore up the previous set of goals I made up last week and immediately wrote down bigger ones.

Are your goals going to stretch you this year?

Are you going to do new things this year?

Happy New Year!

I truly hope that everything you set out to accomplish in 2009 becomes reality and that you have an amazing year.

Your Daily Kick… Sit and think

After a long hiatus, the Your Daily Kick section of this blog is now back and ready for action. When I started this section the premise was to help people by giving useful, relevant, timely, and easy to implement actionable advertising tips. A kind of kick in the pants to get your advertising off the ground, your creativity flowing, and/or thoughts for later on.

And things were going pretty good, but I stumbled… well, more like fumbled the ball and let it slide. I’ve decided to bring it back and renew Your Daily Kick.

So, your kick for today… the action you should take right now is to… sit and think.

To be more precise; sit down in a quiet location for 15 minutes and think about something related to your advertising and then do it. Let’s break this down a little so you can see what I mean.

Sit down. This isn’t just something you should do once in a while. I once read somewhere that when you take just 15 minutes a day to sit down and think your productivity increases. You seem to focus on things better and are not doing anything else. When you’re walking around, listening to music, doing laundry, walking on treadmill, taking the dog out, or any other of a wide variety of things that people do you’re not really focusing. Sitting down helps set the mood for thinking.

In a quiet location. You can’t think with noise going on around you. I’ve heard a lot of the excuses people make.

“I need some noise in the background.”
“I think better with my mp3 player blasting in my ears.”
“I have kids and they find me everywhere.”

Do any of these sound familiar? I’ve used them all myself. However, the fact still remains that when I set aside a few minutes every day to sit down away from everything and think I get a lot more done during the day.

For 15 minutes. No more. No less. Set an alarm if you need to. But, 15 minutes of silence, by yourself, sitting down can lead to hours of effective productivity. For you marketing needs, these 15 minutes can lead to a fulfilling day of advertising that produces results. Why 15 minutes?

This way you can’t overwhelm yourself with a bunch of tasks that you can’t possibly complete. You have enough time to think about what you need to do, how to do it, and get yourself ready to do it. And because it’s really not that long.

Especially if you have kids. I find this works for me because I have three homeschooled kids running around everyday and any longer than 15 minutes means complete chaos.

Think about something related to your advertising. This doesn’t mean the errands you need to run today, the leaky faucet that needs to be fixed, what you’re going to have for dinner, or the birthday gift you need to pick up. It means something related to your advertising.

Then do it. After you’ve sat down in a quiet location for 15 minutes and thought about something related to your online advertising then you’re ready to actually do it.

Whatever you thought about, planned out, or decided to do related to your marketing… do it! Don’t sit on it. Don’t leave it for later. Don’t end your 15 minutes and then immediately go into mowing the lawn, going to the store, or checking out your RSS reader. Do your advertising. If you put it off for later you will either cut corners or continue to put it off.

Do it.

Ready, Set… Go!

There you have it. Your Daily Kick for the day. Actually, something you should do everyday. Make it a daily habit. For me, this is the first thing I do after I check out my email, RSS feeds, and social networking activities.

What are you waiting for? Get going. Sit down and think.

Marketing in the New Year

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about marketing and online advertising. More specifically I’ve been thinking about, and trying to see ahead, the direction that advertising will take in the coming new year.

I do this throughout the year on a regular basis. I take some time each year to evaluate my own plans for my websites (which I never get to because I’m too busy helping other succeed in their online advertising) and those of my current clients. I don’t just do this near the end of the year, but on a roughly bi-monthly basis.

However, this isn’t about my marketing plans for the coming year so much as what I see will happen in online marketing in 2009 and beyond.

You have probably started to notice that the world of online advertising isn’t something that stands still but rather is always changing. New techniques, strategies, and marketing venues are popping up all the time and, yeah the old school stuff is still great, but the new stuff is always bright and shiny.

Online marketing is going to get a little scary.

Online advertising is going to really start stretching people in the coming new year. People are going to have to start learning some of the new technological and social advances that have come along in the previous year, or year and a half. Things like social media, video production, mobile optimization, search engine changes, and other things are going to get a lot more advanced and specialized. It’s going to get scary.

Online video will be the benchmark for success.

It started a little bit in ‘07 and started to rapidly climb in use in ‘08. I only see the use of video becoming more important in 2009.

Video is a way for people to put an image to a brand. It’s more than just a logo. It’s real, personal, moving, and can create buzz incredibly fast.

And there isn’t any excuse not to get started with video anymore. Developers have made it very easy to create, edit, and upload videos. And you can do it without spending a whole lot of money. The biggest, and really only, expense would be the video camera. But, chances are you already own one. If not, you can pick up the ultra hip flip camera for $150. After that you can use software that comes with it, or windows movie maker (or whatever mac users have), and upload the thing to YouTube.

Video can be used for anything from landing pages, blog posts, special exclusive content, or even pre-prepared series. It’s a great medium which I still see as greatly underused.

I’ve made my own pledge to myself that I will begin using video for marketing and building buzz virally.

Social Media will be the main marketing emphasis.

This past year, social networking websites have taken online marketing to a whole new level. You can expect a lot more of it in the coming new year.

The last couple of months, I have been telling all my clients, before they do any kind of other marketing, to get socially connected. Start accounts on the main networks first then, once comfortable, branch out from there.

Uniqueness and creativity will rise to the top.

The last thing I see is the developing trend towards people being themselves and showing their uniqueness instead of their mindless automation. That probably has a lot to do with social media marketing and the necessity to be real in that setting. People like people who are unique and allow their own creativity to be shown instead of that of someone else.

For example, I deal with a lot of people involved with network marketing opportunities. In doing so, one of the things I am always telling them is to be themselves; set up their own website or blog, create their own marketing materials, videos, and autoresponder series and build their brand. The response is much better and they are building a stronger web presence for themselves instead of the company they are affiliated with.

Marketing in 2009… pull your seatbelts tight and hang on!

I’m excited about the possibilities for the coming year. I am working on some amazing advertising campaigns (if I do say so myself) that is going to rely heavily on these factors as well as some of the things we are already familiar with.

Are you ready for the new year? Are you ready for some of the changes that are going to take place? Are you now getting yourself familiar with videos, social networking, and your own creativity?

What do you think is going to take place next year? What are you learning or advising others to do? Let us know in the comments section.

Three New Ideas To Keep People Coming Back To Your Website

I love internet advertising.

I love the challenge of not only working to build traffic to a website for a client, but also the challenge to always be thinking ahead and creatively creating new ways to advertise and capitalize on the traffic by keeping people coming back.

Your advertising isn’t really all that effective if you don’t have a plan in place to keep the traffic you get to visit your website to continue visiting it. I usually grade my ad campaigns with several different criteria, but two of them are;

1. How much traffic is coming to the site everyday? and,
2. How much repeat traffic is re-visiting the site each day?

Two very important testing points to a successful advertising campaign.

The key is how do you get people to return.

Three New Ideas For Repeat Traffic

I don’t if it is because I get bored easily or because I like to stretch boundaries and not follow everyone else, but I like to fiddle with things. I like to change them or improve them just to do things different. Status quo is not in my vocabulary. I think it makes people stale and lazy.

So, I’ve been thinking about and working out some new ideas for generating repeat traffic to your website or blog. Here’s six of my idea.

1. Be A Reality Star. Online video is becoming increasingly popular with online marketers. The biggest reason for that is that it is getting a lot easier to produce. A flip cam, windows movie maker, and a youtube account is just about all you need. Just record, edit, upload. Quick, easy, and so very productive.

Video is a great tool, but I think is hugely underused by online marketers. And where it is being used is getting stale and boring. What I am suggesting is to create a video series that is different and fresh. Create a reality show that shows you actually working your business opportunity, using the product you’re trying to sell, talking with clients, or whatever your niche is in. Just hit record and forget… for at least 15 minutes anyway.

And then offer this everyday. Make a huge deal of it in your blog, within your social networking circles, and in your emails.

You could use a service like Ustream, which is being used by people with great success… but, I like the thought of videos on your own domain, your own server, and with your own site’s design. The whole reason to get repeat traffic is to get it to your site.

What can you make a daily series of? Get a little creative with it and have fun with it. People like to see others have fun.

2. Write A Page A Day. We all give away free stuff for people to join our mailing lists, but not often to get people to return to our web pages. What if instead of giving away an entire ebook, report, or some other freebie you just uploaded a new section each day?

This idea is to instead of having a complete ebook for people to download and read at their leisure (which usually never gets read), you just upload a new section of that ebook on a daily basis for a set period of time. That will keep people coming back each day, to your website, to see the new section.

Again, they are on your domain, your web page, and your design with your products made available.

3. Use A 30/30 Plan. What is the 30/30 plan? Very simply this. You ask an expert in your niche 30 questions and then release the answers, one at a time, for a period of 30 days. This would work great if your main website is a blog. People will keep coming back to see each answer.

The key to making this idea work would be to ask relevant questions to real problems that people are having. Within each answer make sure there are plenty of resources and other content that people will find interesting and useful.

Once you get the first 30 days done, have another set of 30 questions ready to do it all over again.

Repeat Traffic Can Be Fun

Advertising doesn’t have to be all about ads and hype. It is fun. When I begin working with a new client I get excited. Because it gives me another opportunity to stretch my creative muscles, blast through boring boundaries, and have a lot of fun doing it!

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, like I am, then use these three ideas and have some fun doing it!

Marketing Success and Profit #50

Yes!

I just put the finishing touches and published my first ezine issue in a few months. I don’t really know why it has taken a back seat but it did.

In fact, I have recently been shown the importance of list building and keeping up with it through fellow bloggers, marketers, and people I have connected with in social networking. I’ve been wanting to get started again, but never really set aside the time to do it.

But, a recent conversation with Liz Martinez of Your Million Dollar Breakthrough and her own marketing that prompted me to put my ezine back to the top of my to do list.

So… you can catch the latest issue of Marketing Success and Profit here or you can subscribe to it here. This issue has a primer for social media marketing and a listing of top social media networks to get started with. I hope you check it out.

Copywriting Tip: It’s all about one on one.

In the previous post on thinking about your advertising plan I had a very short section where I talked very briefly about making people feel like it is just you and them in your advertising.

I’d like to elaborate on that a little bit. I kind of left it hanging there and wanted to make sure that there isn’t any confusion about what I meant by that.

Copywriting is about a conversation.

In my years of copywriting and working with people in their advertising I have come to realize that copywriting is all about the conversation between you, the advertiser, and the reader, the consumer.

When you talk to somebody you’re not carrying on multiple conversations with several people all at once. Hopefully you are paying very close attention to the one person that you are addressing. When you do this the conversation is a lot more productive and both sides feel comfortable. It’s a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling really.

Copywriting, no matter what the piece is you are writing, needs to have the kind of connection. You need that same warm, fuzzy feeling.

In the previous post I made this statement, “People like to feel like they are the only one you are talking to.” That means a one on one conversation.

How do you do that with a sales letter, or ppc ad, or email ad, or even a blog post?

That’s where the tricky part comes in.

1. Be passionate about whatever it is you’re advertising. People can tell instantly if there is no feeling in your copywriting. If it’s just hype and drivel the conversation never gets started. It falls into the background as noise and never taken seriously. But, if there is passion… true passion… your copywriting takes on a personal feeling.

2. Use personal stories. Whatever is going on in life, whether it be yours or theirs (economy, holiday, etc.) touch on it a little bit right at the beginning. That sets a personal tone and narrows the gap between out of touch advertiser and thinking consumer. Again, you are making things more personal.

3. Use “you” and “we”. One way to become more one on one in your copywriting is to use “you” and “we” throughout your writing. Again, you are trying to be more personal and bring the conversation down to just you and them. Saying things like, “How do you feel during the economic down turn?”, or “When was the last time you read a report on…”, or “When we get together for this special webinar…” creates a real conversation.

4. Be letter like. Everyone loves to receive letters. Even in today’s age of email and quick, short notes a personal letter always gets people’s attention. It makes them slowdown and really take in what is being said.

5. Think like you are sitting across from them. Finally, one of the biggest hurdles to jump over when writing conversationally is to think it. Picture in your mind that you are actually sitting across from someone in your target audience and talking about your product, opportunity, or service.

If you can picture that then everything else comes naturally. You will naturally write like it is a conversation and follow the personal rules that apply.

Whenever I am writing anything I always picture a particular person in my mind. Once I get that picture in my head then I start talking. From there the advertising piece begins to take on a whole new dimension. It is no longer advertising but a conversation.

Try conversational copywriting in your next advertising piece.

I will admit that this is a copywriting strategy that does take some time to get use to. But, it does improve your results. Give it a try, or you can always hire me to do it for you.

Two Big Thoughts In Planning Your Advertising

Two Big Thoughts In Planning Your Advertising

Planning an advertising campaign can be a pretty daunting task. The thought of everything that goes into an advertising campaign can simply be a little confusing as to where to start. Fortunately, online advertising can be broken down into three must have strategies that are essential and relatively simple to get started with. However, there is another element to online advertising. It’s you. Your thoughts when you’re putting together your ad campaign is the rudder that steers your campaign. Where your thoughts are determines the outcome, or actually the effectiveness, of your marketing. So the question then becomes, “What should I be thinking about?”

Two Big Thoughts To Get You Started

When you get down to the very basics of online marketing there are really only two big thoughts. When planning your advertising campaign these two thoughts should be in the front of your mind as you are preparing your advertising and planning your implementation.

Big Thought #1 What is it I want to accomplish with this campaign? That might sound like a simple thought. However, I see a lot of ads and campaigns that people are running and I have absolutely no idea where they want to go with it. It’s very important that not only you know what you want to accomplish, but that the audience you are targeting also knows what you want! Each individual campaign is part of a much larger, end game type, campaign. Your thought, or main goal, for each campaign must line up with the larger one. However, each individual campaign will, and absolutely must have its own viable thought. For instance, let us assume that you are advertising a marketing opportunity. Of course you want people to eventually join this opportunity so you are rewarded with people in your downline from which you make money from. That’s the end goal. However, your campaigns shouldn’t be all about that. It should take on separate individual goals which will line up with the eventual goal. For something like this your thoughts could be…

  • sign up for an email list,
  • watch a video,
  • download a free report,
  • purchase a small ticket item,
  • follow you on twitter or some other social media website,
  • request a phone call from you,
  • click a link to your blog,
  • enter a contest,
  • or any number of other things that you want the person to do. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an immediate sign up for the opportunity. That’s where most people go wrong with their advertising. They want instant results for their end goal when sometimes it takes finesse and smaller steps. So, think about what it is you want to accomplish with this particular campaign.

Big Thought #2 What is my target audience?

There is not only one target for every product. Did you get that? So many people think that they can just load up a shotgun and blast away at a large, narrowly defined audience of people and begin to collect the big paydays. That can happen in some instances,

BUT there are always smaller targets that will produce much more in the long run. When creating your plan begin to think of the exact audience you want to see your advertising. And I am talking exact. There is more than one audience for every product. Again, with the above example of a marketing opportunity there are several different groups of people you can target. Your materials should reflect that.

Short side note: Here’s something to think about…. whenever you are writing, or creating any type of advertising material (email ads, landing pages, ppc ads, articles, blog posts, reports, etc…) it is so important to remember this one incredibly huge factor to emotional stimulus. People like to feel like they are the only one you are talking to.

I want to repeat that… People like to feel like they are the only one you are talking to.

    End of my side note.

Each individual target audience wants to know that you are not “courting” anyone else. That you are only interested in them and each of your advertising materials is a way of getting that feeling across. With the above example, you could break that down into smaller targets like…

  • new marketers looking for an opportunity to get started with,
  • veteran marketers burned out on a bunch of scams and go nowhere money plans,
  • leader types who love the challenge of recruiting,
  • stay at home moms who are looking for a way to make extra money,
  • leading affiliate marketers wanting to expand their income streams,
  • and, of course, you could break that down into smaller and smaller chunks. The thing to remember is that a narrowly defined audience will produce larger returns than a huge shotgun approach.

    Get to planning!

Ok, you’ve got to things to think about. Now get out there and get going with your planning.

Advertising Quick Tip: 3 Marketing Srategies You MUST Be Using

    Online advertising is complex.

There are so many methods that one can use in advertising a website, or blog, that it can easily overwhelm someone and cause inaction. But, it doesn’t have to be that complicated.

One of the things I always tell my advertising package clients about advertising is that the key to advertising is to pick a few advertising methods and work them until you feel comfortable with the whole marketing thing and then test other methods.

The question I usually get from clients is “What strategies do I start with?”

    Three MUST Do Marketing Strategies

In my opinion there are three marketing strategies that you MUST use each and every day. Whether or not your are a new online marketer or have been doing this for 10 years, these three must always be there.

    Number 1 Online Marketing Strategy.

    Write articles.

This has been pushed and pushed and pushed and pushed for years. Everyone knows that writing articles for advertising your website is the most powerful marketing strategies you can use. Unfortunately there are still those that don’t bother with it or are marketing rather poorly with articles.

Article marketing works when done consistently and within certain boundaries.

    Article marketing pointers…

    1. Be consistent. Write at least 5 to 6 articles a week and submit them to major article directories.
    2. Write short, easy to read articles instead of long, drawn out ones.
    3. Spread your articles around the web but don’t submit each one to every directory.
    4. Write original articles for blogger.com and wordpress.com
    5. Link back to relevant pages on your site, or landing page, in the author’s info box.

No matter where you are in your internet marketing adventure, article marketing is absolutely essential.

    Number 2 Online Marketing Strategy.

    Get social.

Whatever you think about social networking there is no denying the fact that it is quickly becoming a very powerful form of marketing. However, it’s still in its infancy and a lot of people are not very comfortable with this new strategy. My opinion is that in the next year the emphasis will swing towards even more social type networking. But, I could be wrong… that happened once…. I think.

Anyway, going social is not as hard as one would believe, but it can be very intimidating. Especially if you are a naturally shy person like me. But… it can be done.

    Social Media starter tips.

    1. Set up profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and StumbleUpon.
    2. Check out what others are doing, saying, and networking on each of these sites.
    3. Begin following and friending people on each site.
    4. Start connecting with your followers and friends by engaging in conversation.
    5. Sprinkle a few links within your conversations.
    6. Be active and relevant.

That’s about it to start with. After you feel more comfortable with engaging in conversations and meeting new people then you can begin to branch out into other social media marketing type websites.

    Number 3 Online Marketing Strategy.

    Blogging.

If you’ve been following me for any length of time you will wonder why my other favorite online advertising method is missing. That being solo email ads. Well, I do think they are essential but for this post I wanted to focus on free strategies for those just getting started or those who have been marketing for a long time but are still bootstrapping it.

Blogging is a marketing strategy. You can start a blog for free at blogger.com or wordpress.com and write posts about any topic you choose. It’s basically a great way to test niches and products.

Anyway for marketing purposes it is absolutely necessary. Here’s why.

First, search engines love blogs. Especially Blogger. With some very basic SEO techniques and informative posts you can begin ranking high in search engines.

Second, you have another powerful advertising technique built in. One of the reasons that blogging is very popular right now is because of the ability to leave comments. Through leaving, and receiving comments, you are building a huge network of links back to your website, or blog. Plus you’re starting to be achieve some name recognition which is the main goal with any advertising campaign.

Third, it’s fun. You get to be a little more loose with your writing than you would be if you were just writing articles. Sure, you are going to keep your blog updated with great information but you also get to let your personality come out more.

Get started with your advertising campaign today with these three marketing strategies.

    Write articles.
    Get social.
    Start blogging.

Three things you can start doing without spending any money and will lead to a tremendous increase in traffic and profits. Give it a try.

Gideon and Yaro are great teachers who go well out of their to teach people interested in blogging to go through all the steps and get started in a painless, non-confusing way.

As someone who has bought some of Yaro’s stuff in the past, I can say that everything is very well presented so that you don’t have to consult other sources to figure out what is being taught. However, I think the best thing about Become A Blogger is that it’s not all at once.

    Training in intervals.

Taking into account that people are busy and don’t have a lot of time to sit down and digest volumes of information and hours of video, Gideon and Yaro have developed an amazing six month program that delivers each module in a systematic and timely manner.
